family   About the Challenge
The Green Homes Challenge guides, rewards,
and recognizes households for saving energy,
adopting green lifestyle practices, and using
   renewable energy.

Three corresponding Challenges make up the
   overall Green Homes Challenge:

Challenge 1: Be a Power Saver!
Save Our Energy, Bank Your Money

Engage in the Power Saver Challenge to reduce your household's utility bills and improve the comfort of your home. Some Power Saver households are using 40% less energy than they used to, and utility bill savings can mount up to thousands of dollars over just a few years. Download the Power Saver Handbook if you prefer using a paper version instead of our interactive site.

Learn about two special initiatives for the Power Saver Challenge: Power Saver Retrofits and the Refrigerator Exchange Program.

Challenge 2: Be a Green Leader!
Green Your Lifestyle, Protect Our Resources

Engage in the Green Leader Challenge to conserve valuable resources, reduce your environmental impact, and create a healthy home. Download the Green Leader Handbook if you prefer using a paper version instead of our interactive site.

Learn about a special initiative for this Challenge: Neighborhood Green

Challenge 3: Be a Renewable Star!
Renew Your Energy, Clear Our Air

The Renewable Star Challenge is all about using clean renewable energy, such as wind, sunlight, thermal energy stored in the ground, or sustainable biomass. The Renewable Star Challenge can help any household use renewable energy for power, heating, cooling, or generating hot water.

Download the Renewable Star Handbook and read the chapters covering all the details for procuring solar hot water systems, solar electric systems, geothermal systems, and wind turbines.

Learn about Solarize Frederick County, a special initiative that increased the number of solar energy systems in Frederick County through volume purchasing and incentive grants.

Government Funding

The Office of Sustainability and Environmental Resources is targeting the residential sector with programs to increase energy efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and conserve natural resources. The Green Homes Challenge initiative is funded in part by the U.S. Department of Energy through an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant award and an EPA Climate Showcase Communities grant. Some special initiatives of the Green Homes Challenge are funded through the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development's Be SMART Program.
