The Comprehensive Planning staff is responsible for long-range planning activities for the County.  These activities include the preparation and update of the County Comprehensive Plan and the preparation of individual community and corridor plans.

This section is also responsible for various functional planning areas including water and sewer planning, environmental planning, historic preservation, and transportation planning.  The planning staff also coordinates with the County's 12 municipalities, which have their own planning and zoning authority.

The Comprehensive Planning Section also acts in a coordinating role with various state and regional agencies including the Maryland Department of Planning, the Maryland Department of Transportation, and the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments.
