Volunteer


 

Thank you for your interest in volunteering at Frederick County Animal Control. FCAC is an exciting place where you can
really Erica M.jpgmake a difference! There are more than 100 volunteers 
 who are actively involved with the 
 care of our animals and the
 maintenance of the shelter. Please
 read below to see if there is an
 opportunity waiting for you.

 
 
The first step to becoming a 
 volunteer is to attend non-committal
 orientation session. 
Orientations 
 are held 1-2 times
per month.

Volunteer Opportunities

 

Animal handling and Foster Care

 

  • Provide temporary care in your home for a shelter animal in need
  • Transport animals in your care or from the shelter to local adoption events
  • Assist at local adoption events
  • Walking and exercising animals
  • Feeding and watering animals
  • Grooming animals (bathing and brushing)
  • Cleaning cages, dishes and bedding
  • Assisting patrons visiting animals
  • Assisting staff with medical care of animals
  • Training animals
  • Providing foster care for special needs
  • Assisting in the spay and neuter clinic
  • Serving as photographer's assistant
  • Transporting animals to adoption fairs

Office & general assistance

 

  • Answering phones
  • Filing contracts and animal records
  • Taking lost and found reports
  • Following up on adoptions
  • Updating Petfinder pet information
  • Delivering posters and flyers to local businesses to display adoptable pets

 

Adoptions (class required)

 

  • Adoption visits (supervising interaction with available animals)
  • Adoption Counseling (helping families choose pets)
  • Intake desk (accepting animals into the shelter and collecting pet bio details)

 

Humane education

 

  • Speaking engagements
  • Writing pet bios for animal cages
  • Attending fairs and festivals
