About the Monocacy River
The Monocacy River is a unique waterway bisecting Frederick County, flowing and meandering 58 miles from its origin on the Mason Dixon Line at the confluence of Marsh and Rock Creeks, to the Potomac River at the C&O Canal National Park near Dickerson. The Monocacy River is a valuable and rich resource that provides water for domestic consumption, effluent disposal, fish and wildlife habitat and many recreational opportunities. This beautiful and peaceful river was included in Maryland's Scenic River Program and given the designation of 'scenic' in 1974. The Monocacy River is uniquely 'Frederick.' It is a defining element in the County.
