The Road to Travel Independence

Public transportation offers individuals with disabilities greater independence and access to employment, recreational and cultural  opportunities.

This video was developed through a partnership between Way Station, Inc.,  Frederick Community College/Job Training Agency Customized Training, and TransIT to assist organizations such as Abilities Network, Way Station, and the ARC to train their clients in how to use transit services.

Way Station, Inc. and The Freedom Center, Inc. offer Road to Travel Independence training – a 1/2 day, comprehensive, intensive instruction designed to teach people with disabilities how to travel safely and independently on public transportation.

The 3-hour training session has 3 parts: the video, “The Road To Travel Independence”, with detailed examples of individuals using the bus and the steps involved; a discussion session to review travel planning specifics such as scheduling, fares, packing for the trip and more; and, an actual trip on the bus to apply what has been learned.

This training is available for agencies as well as individuals. Group sessions are scheduled monthly and individual sessions are scheduled as needed.
