Focus
The leading cause of death in Maryland for citizens aged one to 44 years
is injuries (unintentional and intentional combined.) Unintentional
injuries are among a top ten priority list for Maryland’s Project 2010
goals.
Unintentional injury is a serious public health problem because of its
impact on the health of Americans, including premature death, disability
and the burden on our health care system.
We know that unintentional injuries are largely preventable. This is
accomplished through efforts to change human behavior, alter the
physical environment, or enhance/enforce policies that increase
protection from injury. However, injuries still kill too many people
each year.
