The Frederick County Health Department has also conducted observational surveys in school zones.
In 2002, their surveys showed that about half of the elementary school children being transported in private motor vehicles were either improperly restrained or not restrained at all in an approved child safety seat, booster seat or vehicle seat belt!
Another dangerous behavior seen all too frequently was that of children 12 and younger riding in the front seat.
Safe Kids Worldwide conducts national research about child pedestrian safety, stop sign violations in school zones, etc. What their research discovers is often shocking, for example:
- A good percentage of parents (45%) did not come to a complete stop at a school zone stop sign
- Others (37%) roll through school zone stop signs and nearly a tenth of parents
- 7% did not even slow down before stop signs!
- A good percentage (about 2/3) also speed through school zones during the 30-minute drop-off period during arrival and dismissal times.
- Parents need to be aware that they are often offenders and must change their driving behavior to increase school zone safety for children.
