Bite or Scratch
  • If the biting animal is still present on-site, contact:
    Animal Control
    (301) 600-1546 
    Monday thru Friday 8:00 am to 4:00 pm
    After hours, weekends and holidays call (301 )600-2558.
  • Any potentially rabid animal collected by Animal Control is submitted to the State Rabies Testing Labs.
  • You will be informed of the results by the Health Department.
  • If the animal is negative for rabies, no further action needs to be taken.
  • If the animal is positive for rabies, a Health Department Sanitarian will contact you and advise what further actions should be taken.
  • If you are bitten by an animal that is unable to be collected, contact your physician, FMH Emergency Department at 240-566-3500 or the Community Health Services Division of the Health Department at (301) 600-3342.
  • If the bite is from a domesticated animal (dog or cat), that animal will need to undergo a 10-day quarantine.
