If an animal is presented at your facility and you think it may have rabies or may have been in contact with a rabid animal, please adhere to the following instructions. Any questions can be directed to the Environmental Health Office at (301) 600-1717.
- If the animal is exhibiting signs of rabies and has a bite wound of unknown origin or no history is known on the animal, the animal can be euthanized and tested for rabies.
- Any animal(s) that is euthanized can be brought directly to the Health Department or submitted through the State Animal Lab, (301) 600-1548, or Animal Control.
- If a pet with a known vaccination history is presented that had exposure to an unknown animal, a booster shot may be given.
After Hour Emergencies
The Health Department has a Sanitarian on call each weekend to cover rabies exposures and emergencies.
To reach the Sanitarian, you can call the Frederick County Communications Center at (301) 600-1603 and they will contact the supervisor on call for Environmental Health via pager.
