Yard Waste Recycling

On January 17, 2006, the Board of County Commissioners approved an ordinance prohibiting yard waste from being disposed in the refuse disposal area of the Frederick County Landfill. This ordinance pertains to both residential and commercial users.

Yard waste consists of materials normally generated in the maintenance of gardens, yards, lawns, or landscaped areas whether residential, commercial or public. This includes leaves, grass clippings, plants, shrubs and prunings.

Yard waste DOES NOT include  land clearing debris, waste pavement, soil or any edible food product (fruits and vegetables) from any garden, yard, lawn or landscaped area.

Suggestions for disposing yard waste:
  • Dispose of yard waste for free at one of the two County Yard Trimming and Mulch Sites: Walkersville Heritage Farm Park (residential use only) or the Reichs Ford Road Mulch and Composting facility (residential and commercial).
  • Residents of municipalities and those living in homeowner association-controlled areas may have curbside yard waste collection provided for them by these entities.  Please contact your town office or HOA for more information
  • Contact a waste hauler regarding yard waste collection in addition to garbage collection.

Unbagged leaves, grass clippings, brush trimmings and limbs (no longer than 8' long and 6" in diameter) can be left by residents at two County locations at no cost.

PLEASE REMEMBER:  Since 1989 Maryland law has required that, "A vehicle with any load may not be driven on any highway unless the load and any covering on the load are fastened securely to prevent the load or covering from becoming loose or detached or from in any way endangering other users of the highway."  This include loads of yard debris, mulch or compost!
