Overview
The following programs have been developed to spark the imagination and curiosity of all young children. Through the use of games, songs, puppets, colorful storybooks, active conversation, and the nature center animals themselves, the children absorb information about the world around them. They are invited to interact with the park naturalist and find enjoyment through each learning lesson.

Program Descriptions
*Awesome Animals
Teaches students through first hand observations the similarities and
differences between mammals, birds, amphibians, insects, arachnids, and
reptiles.
*Beautiful Birds
Introduces students to the
common birds of Maryland, including birds of prey. They learn what makes “a
bird a bird” and how these characteristics help it to survive in the wild.
*Going Buggy
Inspires students to delve
into the fascinating world of insects. They learn how to compare “complete” and
“incomplete” life cycles with a focus on the stages of metamorphosis.
*Slithering Snakes
Provides students the
opportunity to discover the world of snakes and learn the characteristics of
reptiles by meeting the resident snakes of the nature center.
Butterflies
Introduces students to the
basic characteristics of insects while learning about butterflies. In the
months of May through mid-October, they will hunt for butterflies with nets in
the park.
*Totally Terrific Turtles
provides students the
chance to enjoy the world of reptiles-and in particular, our turtles. They will
learn the characteristics of all reptiles and visit with some of the center’s
turtle friends.
*In-School Presentations
Programs with an asterisk are also available as an in-school presentation. These include: live animal presentations and interactive nature activities. The program fee will include the cost of the program plus a $50 transportation fee.
