Household Hazardous Waste
Residents are strongly encouraged to dispose of their household hazardous waste in an environmentally sound manner. The Department of Solid Waste Management sponsors two Household Hazardous Waste Days a year. One event is held in the spring and the second is held in the fall.

There is no charge to participate in these events! The only requirements are you must be a resident of Frederick County and all items must be generated by a residence NOT a business (including home-based business).

Businesses (including home-based) should reference the Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR) for guidelines regarding the disposal of hazardous waste.

Is it really mercury?
Mercury thermometers will have a silver/white substance in them, if yours contains red or blue it is not mercury.

Propane Tanks- Contact local vendors regarding recycling.
All Paint (latex and oil) – Paint can be dried out and brought to the Landfill. Inexpensive waste paint hardener is available at paint and home improvement stores and will dry paint in a matter of minutes. You may also remove the lid, add a clumping agent (sand, mulch, kitty litter, etc), and allow to air dry. Please remember to dry paint in a well ventilated area.
