Addressing and Road Naming
Frederick County GIS, under Interagency Information Technologies of Frederick County Government provides property addressing assignment and road naming approval in the land development process. The Frederick County GIS is responsible for approval of the use of all road naming in Frederick County, including all municipalities. The office is also responsible for addressing assignment of properties within the County but not within the municipalities.
In 1976 Frederick County developed a 1,000 foot by 1,000 foot addressing grid system to provide an enhanced numbering system to identify addressable structures. This was necessary to improve property and structure identification in order to aid public safety efforts throughout the County. Address numbers are assigned on a lot by lot basis with even numbers on the north and west sides of the road and odd numbers on the south and east sides of the road. Roadways running diagonally are identified as north/south or east/west based on the predominant direction. All proposed road names county-wide are submitted to the Frederick County GIS office for approval and reviewed for duplications and similarities to existing roads. This is performed in an effort to reduce the potential for confusion in the event of an emergency services request.
The Frederick County GIS is currently in the process of developing new addressing tools to support improved methods of address assignment.
