The Refrigerator Exchange Program (REP), a special initiative of Frederick County ‘s Green Homes Challenge, provided eligible customers with a free, brand new, energy efficient, ENERGY STAR® rated refrigerator in exchange for a qualified less efficient model manufactured in or before 2001. All exchanged refrigerators are being collected and recycled in a comprehensive and environmentally-sound manner by JACO Environmental, Inc.
Refrigerators were available on a first-come, first-served basis and the program ran as long as funding lasted -- until August 15, 2014. The REP is funded through grants from the Maryland Energy Administration and will help the state meet its goal of reducing per-capita energy use by 15% by 2015.
Available Whirlpool brand models included:
15 cu ft
18 cu ft
19 cu ft
CEE Tier 3***
21 cu ft
CEE Tier 3
As of August 15, 2014, 235 REP applications were approved and 115 new refrigerators have been installed with many more on the way!
Do you have high electric bills? An older refrigerator could be a big part of the problem, especially because refrigerators run all day and all night. Refrigerators manufactured before 2001 use a lot more energy than today’s Energy Star models.
In the past 10 years alone, refrigerators have become 50% more efficient! Using an Energy Star® refrigerator over 10 years could save your family $500 - $2,000 depending on the age of your current refrigerator.
