response to requests from volunteer fire companies for full-time liaison staff
for the volunteer fire and rescue services community, the
Frederick Board of County Commissioners on August 7, 2014, appointed Chip
Jewell to serve as Director-Volunteer Chief of the new Division of Volunteer Fire &
Mr. Jewell reports to the County Manager and receives direction from the
Director-Fire Chief of the Division of Fire and Rescue Services, as well as
from the Frederick County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association Executive
Jewell previously served as Director of the Frederick County Emergency
Communications Department since 2006. Previously, he served as Director of Volunteer Fire and Rescue Services. Prior to that,
he worked in the insurance business, while he continued to volunteer in the
fire service. Before that, he was a
9-1-1 dispatcher and became certified
as an emergency medical technician in 1974.
his fire service in 1969 at age 16 when he became a firefighter for United
Steam Fire Engine Co. No. 3. Mr. Jewell volunteers and is a life member
at the Junior Fire Co. No. 2 and Libertytown Volunteer Fire Department.
He also volunteers at the Frederick
County Fire & Rescue Museum in Emmitsburg, Md.
Mr. Jewell has authored two books about the fire service in
Frederick County. He holds a bachelor’s degree in fire science / fire
fighting from the University of Maryland University College.
