Waste Reduction Award Program for Frederick County Businesses Annual award recognizes local efforts to "go green" and waste less.
While recycling is an important component of an integrated waste management system, there are steps that can be taken before excess materials are generated needing to be recycled. Source reduction is a strategy that tackles the challenge of waste before it even begins - think of it as "pre-cycling". Source reduction includes strategies such as using less packaging, implementing green purchasing programs, favoring reusable over disposable materials, and much more.
The Department of Solid Waste Management, in cooperation with other local agencies and organizations, has created a new awards program to recognize the innovative steps that forward-thinking local businesses are taking to create less waste.
On November 10, 2009, the Board of County Commissioners announced the first winners of the Source Reduction Award and recognized the efforts these local businesses and county departments are making to manage their waste responsibly.
