Services Provided

The Department of Solid Waste Management (DSWM) is responsible for multiple services and programs in Frederick County that affect all households and businesses. This does not include trash collection services, which are provided by municipalities or private haulers and contracted by municipal governments, homeowner's associations, or individual residents.


DSWM responsibilities include:
  • Management of the currently operating solid sanitary landfill (site B) as well as monitoring and managing the closed landfill (site A)
  • Management and contractor over sight for the county's curbside recycling program
  • Operation of a recycling drop-off center
  • Operation of 2 county-owned yard waste recycling centers
  • Organization of twice-yearly Household Hazardous Waste Drop Off events
  • Educational outreach services for all of the previously listed programs
