[ARCHIVED] Executive Gardner Announces Agreement to Assist Fort Detrick with Solid Waste Management Needs

Col Scott Halter - Commander - US Army Garrison - Fort Detrick and County Executive Jan Gardner 08

Frederick County Executive Jan Gardner  announced a short-term solution to Fort Detrick’s solid waste management needs while a longer-term amendment to the county’s Solid Waste Management Plan is in the process.

“We all want what is best for our community and the people who live and work here,” commented Executive Gardner.  “I am pleased to provide this agreement with Fort Detrick, our county’s top employer with 10,000 jobs.  If any of our community partners ask county government for a solution to their needs, we will do what we can to help.”

Recently, Fort Detrick discontinued the incineration of waste generated on the installation due to increased costs and challenges to the maintenance of the system.  In addition, the cost of making the necessary upgrades to ensure continued compliance with state regulations and to meet stringent monitoring requirements led to the decision to close the incinerators.

The agreement Executive Gardner approved will allow Fort Detrick to temporarily bring municipal solid waste to the county’s landfill transfer station on Reichs Ford Road.  This agreement is for regular garbage generated by household and office waste, and does not include medical or laboratory waste.
