Red Folder Program

What is the Red Folder?

The Red Folder is a safe place to keep copies of important medical information, like your goals of care. It is big enough to hold standard-sized paper and durable enough for long-term use. Its bright red color makes it easy to spot, and built-in magnets let you attach it to your fridge. The folder is also portable, so you can take it with you when traveling or in an unplanned evacuation.

First Responders, including Paramedics, Firefighters, and Law Enforcement Officers, are trained to look for the Red Folder. In an emergency, you can quickly point the responders to the folder, so they will be able to find the answers to many of the questions that are commonly asked during the medical care process. If you're unable to speak, the folder ensures responders still have important information about your medical care wishes.

Documents that should be stored in your Red Folder include:

  • Advanced Directives
    • Living Will
    • Medical Power of Attorney
    • Appointment of Healthcare Agent
    • Healthcare Instructions
  • Maryland MOLST Form
  • Emergency Information Card, includes:
    • List of medical conditions
    • Current medications list
    • Allergies
    • List of medical care providers
  • Caregiver Emergency Form
  • A Recent Photo

It is recommended that any documents you store in your Red Folder are duplicates, not originals.

The Red Folders are FREE to all individuals living in Frederick County, Maryland. However, we do request only one folder per household when possible.

Who Should Have a Red Folder?

The Red Folder is an important tool for older adults in our community. However, any person with multiple medical diagnoses, extensive medication lists, or who requires more complex levels of care can also benefit from having a Red Folder to help better manage their medical information.

Why are Advanced Directives Important?

Often referred to as goals of care, an advance directive is your way of communicating your medical care wishes. This helps first responders, doctors, and family members know what you want if you experience a medical emergency, helping to guide the medical care that you receive. Medical emergencies can be stressful, but having advance directives in place beforehand can help to alleviate some of the fear and anxiety of those who may need to make decisions about your medical care for you. For additional information on advance directives, please visit our partners at Frederick Health: Advance Care Planning.
