Tree-Mendous Partners!

Local partners and state programs are helping Frederick County grow green.

Last summer, McClintock Distillery approached the Department of Natural Resources with the desire to do something “green” for their community. Established in downtown Frederick in 2016, McClintock is renowned for its sustainability efforts. They utilize organic grains, support small family-owned farms, and strive to reduce waste and conserve water. This commitment to the environment makes them a natural fit to be one of Frederick County’s Green Partners

Working to make this idea a reality was the Division of Energy and Environment’s (DEE) own summer intern, Abbie Peterson, who connected partners and arranged to have trees planted at Frederick County Parks and Recreation facilities.

McClintock’s donation of $7,000 was used with the State’s Tree-Mendous Maryland program, providing 200 native trees for County parks.

Abbie worked with Anne Gilbert of the Maryland Forest Service, Park Superintendent Matt McKee, and DEE Project Manager Linda Williamson, to select and purchase discounted native trees through the State’s “Tree-Mendous Maryland” program. Leveraging the power of the State program, McClintock’s donation was used to purchase 200 native trees. Abbie selected native species that would thrive in this region, such as tulip poplar, white oak, sugar maple, red oak, sycamore, and more. Parks and Recreation’s team planted the new trees and created a maintenance plan to ensure the longevity of McClintock’s gift to the community.

In 2021, Maryland launched the ambitious Tree Solutions Now Act, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at planting 5 million native trees across the state by 2031. This plan envisions one tree planted for every Maryland resident. To turn this vision into reality, the Department of Natural Resources rolled out several innovative programs, one of which is Tree-Mendous Maryland. This program offers discounted trees to landowners, local governments, and community groups, helping them contribute to the monumental goal of 5 million trees planted to support clean water, fresh air, and expanding forested areas.
