Application Period for Rural Historic Preservation Grant Program Opens September 1

Public Invited to Learn More at Upcoming Workshops the exterior of a historic brick building
FREDERICK, Md. – Eligible owners of historic properties located in unincorporated areas of Frederick County may apply for the Rural Historic Preservation Grant Program beginning September 1 until November 30, 2025. Award notifications will take place in early Spring 2026.

Grants are awarded on a competitive basis. Properties must be in unincorporated areas of Frederick County and be either on the County Register of Historic Places or in a County designated Historic District. If not yet designated, the Historic Preservation Commission must determine their eligibility before the grant application is submitted, and this determination letter must be included with the application.

Applicants may request up to $50,000. Grant funds may be used for expenses related to exterior work to stabilize, rehabilitate, restore, or preserve historic buildings. Projects must meet the U.S. Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Treatment of Historic PropertiesGrants will not be awarded for work that is already underway or completed, new construction, or landscaping.

Informational workshops will be offered to help guide interested applicants through the program and application process. Attendance at only one workshop is required. Please register in advance at the website listed below. Registrants will receive an email prior to the virtual workshops with details including Microsoft Teams login information.

  • August 27 at 6:30 pm - Virtual
  • September 3 at 12:00 pm - Walkersville Library, 2 S. Glade Road
  • September 15 at 6:30 pm - Virtual
  • September 24 at 6:30 pm - C. Burr Artz Library, Trust Conference Room
  • October 8 at 12 pm - Virtual
