FREDERICK, Md. – Frederick County’s Peace and Plenty Rural Historic District is being recognized by the Maryland Historical Trust with a Community Impact Award. The district is one of 11 Preservation Awards the Trust is presenting for noteworthy accomplishments in the preservation field, outstanding education, restoration, and revitalization projects, and individual leadership.
“Our rural areas contribute to our sense of place and our historic structures bring our rich history to life,” County Executive Jessica Fitzwater said. “The Peace and Plenty Historic District brings these together, protecting over 1,000 acres of agricultural land and many historically significant structures. I am proud Frederick County is being recognized for leading the way with our integrated preservation efforts.”
The Peace & Plenty Rural Historic District is the first locally designated rural historic district in Maryland. It was established by Frederick County Government in April 2023. The district consists of 10 historic parcels with 48 structures. The area is roughly bounded by Detrick Road, Old Annapolis Road, Green Valley Road, and Old National Pike. All the properties in the district played a role in the county’s rich agricultural history. The architecture of the houses, barns, and outbuildings show the evolution of farm life from 1760 to 1940. The Peace & Plenty Rural Historic District appears on the Frederick County Register of Historic Places.
Peace & Plenty was created following a collaborative planning process, led by property owner Ballard “Jim” Jamieson. Most of the properties within it include agricultural easements held by the County and State. As a result, the district had to meet both land preservation and historic preservation goals and requirements. The initiative created a cohesive approach to safeguard community character, serving as a potential model for other rural historic districts in the state.
