FREDERICK, Md. –Middletown seniors soon will have a space for activities, programs, and services. An active adult community center will open in the old library building on Prospect Street in Middletown, Frederick County Executive Jessica Fitzwater announced today. Once renovations are complete, the Division of Aging and Independence will operate activities at the center on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
“We are extremely fortunate to have this opportunity to repurpose the former library into a 50+ Active Adult Community Center,” County Executive Fitzwater said. “By repurposing this building, we can support the needs of this growing population quickly and with the resources currently available. We will be removing barriers to programs and services so seniors in Middletown can thrive in the community they love.”
One in five Frederick County residents is age 60 older. The senior population is growing at three times the rate of the county as a whole. Studies show that seniors who are active and stay connected are healthier overall.
The new Middletown Active Adult Community Center will offer:
- Space to host programs. This includes education and screenings in partnership with the Health Department and more.
- Opportunities for arts/crafts, exercise, and games, including outdoor events such as Seniors in the Park.
- Access to services. Examples include assistance with Medicare and prescription drug subsidy applications, caregiver support programs, and veterans resources.
- Connection to the internet, including offerings from the division’s Virtual Senior Center.
The Division of Aging & Independence will complement existing opportunities in the Middletown community by offering programming on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
