[ARCHIVED] New Year Brings Changes to Frederick County Christmas Tree Recycling Program

FREDERICK, Md. – The Frederick County Division of Solid Waste and Recycling is changing where Christmas trees and wreaths can be recycled. Christmas trees will now only be accepted at the County’s Reichs Ford Road facility, located at 9031 Reichs Ford Road in Frederick. This change is due to declining participation and an increase in municipal and HOA curbside pick-up, along with increased contamination worries.

Residential customers can recycle Christmas trees at either the Recycle Center Drop-Off or the yard waste site via the scales. Commercial customers must recycle Christmas trees using the scales at the yard waste site.

Here are some other important reminders:

  • If using the scales, commercial and residential customers must use an inside attended lane and clearly identify they are dropping off Christmas trees or wreaths.
  • If a customer wishes to drop off municipal solid waste, construction and demolition, or other yard-waste, a separate transaction will be required.
  • Trees must be natural, and free of decorations, lights, ornaments, tinsel, ribbons, netting, and bags.
  • No after-hours drop-off is allowed. Please visit during normal operating hours: Monday through Saturday between 7:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
  • Trees will not be accepted at any other location.
  • The program will run through Saturday, January 31.

Trees will be recycled as part of Frederick County’s yard waste and compost program. This program provides mulch and Revive Compost for agricultural, commercial, and residential use. Revive Compost meets EPA standards for direct food application and is available year-round for $15 per ton at the Reichs Ford Road facility.

The Frederick County Division of Solid Waste and Recycling provides integrated waste management for the county and its residents with waste reduction, recycling, and disposal programs. More information on these and associated events can be found by calling 301-600-2960, @FrederickRecycles on Facebook and Instagram, and online at www.FrederickCountyMD.gov under “Departments.”
