[ARCHIVED] County Seeks Input on COVID-19 Memorial

Remembering those who died

FREDERICK, Md. – One year ago this week, Frederick County lost its first resident to the COVID-19 virus. Since that time, 291 more people in the community have died as a result of the virus. County Executive Jan Gardner today asked the public to consider appropriate ways to commemorate lives lost from the pandemic. People are invited to submit ideas and suggestions for a Frederick County COVID-19 Memorial through April 16.

“As we approach the sad milestone of 300 lost lives, it is important that we honor those lives in a lasting and meaningful way,” Executive Gardner said. “Frederick is a caring community, and we can demonstrate that by supporting family and friends with a memorial where they can remember their loved ones.”

Ideas for a memorial may be submitted through the County’s website at FrederickCountyMD.gov/Memorial. Suggestions should be submitted no later than 4 p.m. on Friday, April 16.

The number of new cases of COVID-19 continues to rise in Frederick County. As of this morning, a total of 18,252 cases have been confirmed in the county, and 292 people have died as a result. The positivity rate increased to 6.24%. To date, 74,082 county residents, or 28.5%, have received their first dose of vaccine, and 45,598 (17.6%) have been fully vaccinated.

The public is reminded that face coverings are required in all indoor public spaces, and in outdoor spaces where people cannot consistently maintain 6 feet of distance from people who are not members of their household.
