[ARCHIVED] Repairs Completed on Major Sewer Line

Crews spread concrete around a large pipe that is in a deep trench

FREDERICK, Md. – Work has been completed to repair a major sewer line that ruptured Tuesday afternoon. The line was placed back in service this afternoon. Over the past three days, Frederick County’s Division of Water and Sewer Utilities and its contractors excavated the 30-inch pressurized sewer line, replaced portions of the pipe, and reinforced a section of the line. A total of 3 million gallons of untreated sewage overflowed before repairs could be completed.

County staff was assisted by contractors JHG Contractors Inc., Mid-Atlantic Utilities Inc., Gabe’s Services Inc., LB Water, and Ferguson Enterprises LLC, who provided support on site or through the acquisition of parts during the emergency repair. In addition, the City of Cumberland provided specialty repair parts. The Independent Hose Company brought its canteen to the site to feed the repair crews.

The Division of Water and Sewer Utilities would like to thank the National Park Service for their cooperation and understanding during the emergency effort, as well as the customers in the Urbana, Ijamsville and Landsdale areas who curtailed their water usage throughout the incident.
