[ARCHIVED] Winter Weather Could Make Morning Commute Messy

FREDERICK, MD – The National Weather Service expects strong winds across Frederick County and accumulating snow in higher elevations on Thursday between 3 and 8 a.m. Roads may be slick, and visibility could be limited during the morning commute.

“Road conditions can change without warning in the winter. We encourage everyone to brush up on winter weather safety and preparations,” said Emergency Management Director Tony Rosano.

Frederick County’s Division of Public Works will have approximately 80 trucks removing snow from the 1,302 lane miles that the County maintains. Crews cannot apply salt brine to the road before this snow because rain is expected, which would wash away or dilute the brine. Instead granular salt will be used, if needed. DPW has 24,450 tons of granular salt and 100,000 gallons of brine across the county.

Drivers are asked to avoid getting close to the snow-removal equipment. Be aware of your surroundings, allow a safe distance between vehicles, and avoid driving close to snowplows. These are some additional steps you can take for everyone’s safety:

  • Be prepared before you drive by topping off the gas tank and windshield fluid as well as packing emergency supplies in your vehicle (sand/kitty litter for traction, flashlights, water and blankets).
  • Completely clear snow from your vehicle before driving. Snow on your vehicle can fall off and create hazardous conditions for other drivers.
  • Turn your headlights on – it helps you to be seen by other drivers, and it’s the law when you use your wipers.
  • Posted speed limits are for blue-sky days, not when there is snow or ice. Slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and brake gently.
  • Remember conditions can change rapidly especially on bridges, ramps and overpasses.
