[ARCHIVED] Frederick County Partners with Community Foundation to Provide Support to Local Food Banks

FREDERICK, Md. – Frederick County Executive Jessica Fitzwater today announced the launch of a new grant program called Frederick FEED: Food Equity and Emergency Distribution. In partnership with the Community Foundation of Frederick County, this program will strengthen food distribution efforts in the community.

“Many people in our community are facing ongoing food insecurity from recent federal actions, including delays in SNAP funding and federal layoffs,” said County Executive Jessica Fitzwater. “I am proud of our work with the County Council and of our partnership with the Community Foundation to distribute funds to organizations that provide food resources to those in need.”

On November 7, County Executive Fitzwater proposed $1 million in one-time emergency funding to help local food banks, which have seen a surge in demand due to the recent government shutdown. The County Council approved the funding on November 18.

The Frederick FEED Grant Program will be open to existing food banks, pantries, religious organizations, and nonprofits operating within Frederick County. Grants awarded may be used to expand food distribution efforts and for equipment purchases to support food operations.

Grants will be awarded through a competitive process managed by the Community Foundation. Applications will be reviewed on an individual basis to provide funds that are essential for meeting the demand in the community.

“The Community Foundation of Frederick County is proud to partner with Frederick County Government to address food insecurity through the FEED Grant Program. Using our team’s expertise and volunteer input, grants will be awarded to local nonprofits with proven success of providing for the nutritional needs of our community,” said Betsy Day, President and CEO of the Community Foundation. “We appreciate the County’s trust in our ability to administer this grant program, and we look forward to reporting back on its impact.”

The funds will be distributed in two rounds, with the first application window set to open on December 1, 2025. The second round of funding is expected to open in early 2026. More details will be provided in subsequent news releases issued by Frederick County Government. To learn more, visit www.FrederickCountyMD.gov/FEED.
